Woodland Road Corridor Safety Improvements
Stoneham, Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) engaged BETA to conduct an evaluation of transportation alternatives along Woodland Road between Pond Street in the Town of Stoneham and Molyneaux Circle in the City of Medford. Woodland Road is an internal park roadway in the Middlesex Fells Reservation, which was designed by Charles Eliot and the Olmsted Brothers, as shown in the original photograph. The purpose of the project was to undergo an in-depth analysis of various alternatives to achieve the goals of a Vision Plan, previously prepared by DCR for the area.
Traffic analysis and conceptual design plans were prepared for five alternatives. Each alternative included provisions for pedestrian/bicycle accommodation and landscape design consistent with the historic nature of Woodland Road.
The recommended alternative included: shared-use path for pedestrians/bicycles; two signalized crossings, with pedestrian signals; roundabout; southbound lane reduction; addition of left turn lanes; historically significant treatments (granite edging, rubble block pavement, and stone tree wells); and plantings including, trees, shrubs, and native restoration adjacent to Quarter Mile Pond.
BETA also prepared documentation for Mass Historical collaboration, prepared Notice of Intents, and attended Conservation Commission hearings in each community.
Final design plans, specifications, and quantity estimates were prepared.
