Traffic Signal Design
Norwalk, Connecticut
BETA has provided traffic signal design services related to the upgrade of five existing signalized intersections within the City of Norwalk, Connecticut. Three of the locations are along CT Route 123 (New Canaan Avenue) in the northwestern region of the city, and two locations along Strawberry Hill Avenue in the southeastern region of the city. These intersections are the third phase of a multi-phase project to upgrade existing signals throughout the city. The signals are currently supported by span wires, which will be changed to mast arm design.
The traffic signal designs incorporate new traffic signal equipment, fiber optic communications for signal interconnect, video detection, system integration, emergency pre-emption, and ADA compliant facilities. Note that the three intersections on New Canaan Avenue are in the immediate vicinity of a fire station, which stresses the importance of emergency pre-emption. The intersections along Strawberry Hill Avenue are located adjacent to schools, which provide additional considerations to accommodate students in the form of bus, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. Several locations also incorporate modified geometry to provide improved turning radii and shorter pedestrian crossings.
This project is currently in the preliminary design review phase. Once all comments are received, BETA will modify the plans to develop the semi-final and final design.
