Safe Streets for All Action Implementation
Springfield, Massachusetts
BETA is working with the City of Springfield to design safety improvements along ten corridors within the city as part of a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Implementation Grant. The corridors have experienced significant crash history. Systemic safety improvements have been identified to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes and crash risk for pedestrian, bicycle, and speeding/aggressive driving crashes. Based on Springfield’s Safety Action Plan, the corridors included represent the locations with the highest crash severity and crash risk for pedestrian, bicycle, and speeding/aggressive driving crashes in the city. Improvements to the project corridors involve safety modifications to the roadway, traffic improvements, sight distance improvements, sign upgrades, pavement marking improvements, corridor lighting, parking modifications, reduced lane widths, road diets, installation of bicycle facilities, and installation of high visibility crosswalks.
