CSX Design-Build Bridge Bundle
Chester and Hinsdale, Massachusetts
As part of the SPS New England’s Design Build Team, BETA was selected by MassDOT Highway Division as the best value for the CSX Design-Build Bridge Bundle No. 1 Project in western Massachusetts. This project, just one part of the Commonwealth’s comprehensive multi-year rail transportation agreement with CSX Transportation, increased the vertical clearance at six bridges along the railroad main line to accommodate double-stack freight trains.
The bridge locations include the Summit Road Bridge in Richmond, MA; the Bridge Street and State Route 8 Bridges in Hinsdale, MA; the Middlefield Road and Bay State Road Bridges in Chester, MA; and the US Route 20 Bridge in West Springfield, MA. BETA was responsible for the complete design of the replacement structures for the Bridge Street and State Route 8 Bridges as well as the jacking and raising of the existing Bay State Road Bridge. In accordance with the Commonwealth’s agreement, the increase in vertical clearance was achieved at these locations on schedule.
