Complete Streets
Lenox, Massachusetts
The Town of Lenox, Massachusetts recognized the need to establish improved pedestrian safety and walkability in their community. With funding from MassDOT’s Complete Streets Program, they retained BETA to develop safer connectivity to civic and commercial areas in the Town Center. This effort focused on four crosswalk locations along Main Street, including geometric modifications to the curb and sidewalk for the installation of curb extensions, raised crosswalks, and ADA ramps. The overall intersection stop control was also modified to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety. Access for the police and ambulance located at this intersection was also a priority, increasing efficiency of response times for these critical vehicles. BETA also provided one location with a pedestrian activated warning beacon (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon) system aimed to secure additional safety measures.
