Boston Road & Allen Road Intersection Improvements
Billerica, Massachusetts
In an effort to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety and minimize traffic conflicts at the Boston Road (Route 3A) and Allen Road Intersection, BETA worked with MassDOT and the Town to re-align the Boston and Allen Road intersection. The project also resulted in improved sight distance and fully actuated traffic signals.
BETA employed the best management practice devices, including deep sump catch basins, sediment traps, and detention basins to control and treat runoff from existing and new pavement areas. A new drainage system outfall was also installed.
Various coordination efforts were needed between National Grid on their gas main replacement, utility pole relocations, and storm water improvements under the MassDOT project.
The geometric design of the intersection required detailed coordination with abutting properties, including a donut shop. Additional, an alteration of the state layout lines was required.
Proposed improvements included:
- Adding one lane in both directions
- Roadway widening
- Pavement milling and overlay
- Sidewalk reconstruction
- Installing ADA wheel chair ramps
- Inclusion of bicycle sharrows
- New signals
- New pavement markings and signs
- Water main replacement
