Belmont Street (Route 9) Improvements

Worcester, Massachusetts

The focus of the Belmont Street (Route 9) project include the improvements of traffic operations, pedestrian mobility, and safety of approximately 1.6 miles of urban arterial roadway from the I-290 interchange east to Alvarado Avenue.  This segment of Route 9 is an urban arterial with an average daily traffic volume of approximately 25,000 vehicles per day.  It provides access to two major hospitals, a National Guard facility, two elementary schools, the new Worcester Vocational School, and many other businesses and residences.

To accomplish the project goals, intensive modeling and analysis of the existing roadway traffic was necessary to evaluate mitigation techniques for vehicle and pedestrian conflicts, fee flow speed and intersection delays.

Traffic signal and geometric improvements are proposed within the corridor to promote more uniform traffic flow, increase capacity, enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety, and improve arterial Level-of-Service for this major link.

In addition to the roadway improvements, structural repairs and upgrades are to be performed to Bell Pond stone retaining wall at the Skyline Drive intersection.  Currently this wall has deteriorated to where it is now a pedestrian hazard.  Repairs will enhance the safe movement of pedestrian volumes through the area.
