Wickford Junction MBTA Station
North Kingstown, Rhode Island
To support the development of the Wickford Junction MBTA Station and parking garage, BETA was retained by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Intermodal Planning section to conduct a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA), followed by a Limited Subsurface Investigation. The environmental investigations were intended to determine if the integrity of soil and/or groundwater at the site had been impacted by the release of oil and hazardous materials and if this release would impact proposed construction activities. The site consisted of three former residential properties and a larger parcel that had been cleared for construction staging.
The Phase I ESA was performed in accordance with ASTM Standard 1527 and consisted of site reconnaissance, an environmental database search for nearby properties of environmental concern, a review of historical photographs and a review of ownership records. The subsurface investigation program involved a series of test pits in proximity to the former dwellings that had been demolished to verify that demolition debris and septic systems had been properly removed. In addition, BETA coordinated with the design firm for the garage, to obtain soil samples from borings being advanced for geotechnical purposes. Soil samples were analyzed for a full suite of contaminants and no significant issues were identified.
