ASTM Phase I/II ESA & Hazardous Materials Survey Services

Nover-Armstrong, a Division of BETA Group, Inc., conducted an ASTM Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) at a ~44 acre portion of the former Worcester State Hospital complex. The Phase I research revealed evidence of potential Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) in connection with the site specifically related to the lack of documentation and unknown closure status of recorded underground storage tank (UST) and aboveground storage tank (AST) systems.
The project team conducted a subsurface investigation at the site, including a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey and subsurface soil and groundwater sampling and analysis, in order to assess potential impacts to subsurface conditions. Subsurface investigation activities did not reveal evidence of impacted soil or groundwater and no abandoned USTs were identified.
The team also performed Pre-Renovation/ Demolition Hazardous Materials Building Surveys for eight of the existing site structures. The surveys involved identification, sampling & analysis, and quantification of all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead-based paint (LBP), and other oils and/or hazardous materials (OHMs).
Environmental services were used to evaluate existing conditions and estimate future costs associated with potential redevelopment of the site.
