Washington Pedestrian Bridge/George Redman Linear Park

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Washington Bridge, once a city street connector and interstate highway carrier, is now a preserved landmark and vital link in the region’s growing bike path, pedestrian way and park system. The design and geographical location promote the attraction of thousands of bicycle commuters and recreational users as it supports health, educational and economic growth and sustainability.

The project scope was to preserve and rehabilitate the south side of the historic landmark while transforming the existing narrow access path into a seven foot wide pedestrian walkway with an eleven to twelve foot wide bike path separated by a five foot median. Adjacent to the operator’s house in the middle of the bridge would be a fourteen by forty foot overlook plaza to serve as a stopping point for pedestrians and cyclists. BETA landscape architects worked with VHB and Ventrone Architecture on this important project for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.  This project recently received a Landscape Design Award from the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
