Wastewater Facilities Plan Amendment – Nasonville Village

The Wastewater Facilities Plan that BETA developed for the Town in 2002 provided recommendations to expand sewer service into unsewered areas, particularly the eastern villages of Glendale, Nasonville, and Mohegan where onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) failures were common or their installation was problematic. Poor soil conditions, high groundwater, and lack of suitable land area were some of the issues that deterred installation of OWTS. The centers of each village are in close proximity to the Branch River, and some residences in these areas were known to have direct discharges of wastewater into the river. The segment of the Branch River (RI0001002R-01A) which runs through the Nasonville village has been classified by the RIDEM as impaired due to elevated levels of bacteria.

Sewer extensions were completed for Glendale and Mohegan in 2007 and 2008, respectively. A portion of Nasonville was also connected to sewers under contract 19B-1 with Mohegan. However, further expansion of sewers into Nasonville was eliminated in the 2014 Wastewater Management Facility Plan due to perceived issues with flow and loading capacity at the treatment facility.

Based on re-development plans proposed by the Burrillville Redevelopment Agency (BRA), sewer expansion will be required in the Nasonville Mill and village area. This Facilities Plan Amendment re-evaluated sewer expansion into the remaining areas of Nasonville to facilitate these development plans.

Additionally, an assessment of the existing infrastructure and equipment at the WWTF was conducted as several treatment areas have equipment that has exceeded its design life and required upgrades to improve efficiency and reliability.
