ADA Sidewalk Compliance
Hartford, Connecticut
BETA is developing construction plans to provide new sidewalk ramps at 71 intersections throughout the City of Hartford. The sidewalk ramps are being designed in accordance with the United States Access Board’s Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way. An appropriate ramp type was identified for each location based on considerations such as sidewalk width, presence of obstructing fixed objects, and presence of a grass or utility strip.
BETA’s design provides a four-foot by four-foot turning space at the top of each ramp in order to accommodate users in wheelchairs. The ramp grades will be within thresholds identified by the Access Board in order to enhance ease of use. Detectable warning surfaces will truncated domes will be provided at each ramp so that they may be more readily identified by visually impaired pedestrians.
BETA’s design also calls for new crosswalks to be installed at several locations in order to enhance connectivity. Crosswalks will be painted or modified as needed in order to match proposed ramp locations.
