Exclusive Pedestrian Phase Project

Hartford, Connecticut

BETA is preparing construction plans for six signalized intersections in the City of Hartford. Each intersection is on a school route and has been identified as being in need of pedestrian safety improvements. The intersections will have new pedestrian signal hardware installed so that exclusive pedestrian phases may be introduced. Pedestrian signalization will include MUTCD compliant countdown pedestrian signals, pedestrian pushbuttons, and pushbutton signage. The design will also identify conduit, wiring, and handholes necessary to provide electrical service. New timing and phasing patterns will be provided and existing controllers will be modified as needed.

BETA will also design sidewalk ramps at several of the intersections in order to replace existing ramps that are in deteriorating condition or lacking in accessibility. The new ramps will be designed in accordance with the United State Access Board’s Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way. Required turning areas, grades, and detectable warning surfaces will be provided.
