CTDOT Clearance Interval Timing
Newington, Connecticut
BETA is retiming yellow and red traffic signal clearance intervals, pedestrian clearance intervals (exclusive pedestrian phase or side-street green), and pre-emption settings at 435 state-owned and maintained traffic control signals in District 2, and 684 state-owned and maintained traffic control signals in District 3. The updated clearance times are calculated based on grade, 85th percentile speeds, posted speeds, critical conflict type, entering vehicle distance, clearing vehicle distance, and pedestrian crossing distance. The project also involves updating signal systems, coordinating yellow clearance times within closed loop systems, and updating technical notes. The revisions are accomplished in accordance with the MUTCD and CTDOT Traffic Control Signal Design Manual.
BETA prepares updated signal plans for each of the 1,119 traffic signals. These plans are being prepared in Microstation using CTDOT’s latest traffic signal plan border and in accordance with CTDOT’s Digital Design Environment.
BETA also prepares Timing and Maintenance forms which are used to implement the revised timings in the field.
