On Wednesday, July 11th, representatives of BETA joined Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and PPAC Board of Trustees Chairman Joseph W. Walsh, Esq. at a grand opening ceremony to officially dedicate the new square. The newly redesigned and refurbished PPAC Square includes the intersection of Weybosset Street and Mathewson Street. The PPAC Square rejuvenation was included in the Downtown Providence Traffic Circulation Improvements Project that has aimed to provide enhancements to areas across the city, including the West End, Olneyville and Federal Hill neighborhoods, as well as the Downtown Arts and Entertainment District. This project has taken measures to repave roadways and sidewalks, upgrade traffic signals and signage and install new ornamental lighting, trees, planters, bike lanes and other amenities.

Describing the project as a collaboration to create a beautiful streetscape, Walsh thanked partners including the mayor, the Providence Department of Public Works, BETA Group and several others. The mayor pointed out the beautiful new lighting, flowers, and sidewalks, creating a signature spot in the city for all to enjoy. Governor Lincoln Chafee was awarded the PPAC Founders Award, acknowledging his strong support for funding the project which occurred while he was a Senator. Accepting the award, Governor Chafee said that “PPAC is truly an iconic institution that holds a special place in the history and cultural life of Providence.”
