Route 135 Intersection and Roadway Improvements
Natick, Massachusetts
BETA was selected to develop intersection and roadway improvements for the Route 135 corridor in the Town of Natick, Massachusetts. Route 135 is a Principal Urban Arterial that extends from the Framingham City line, through Downtown Natick, to the Wellesley Town line. The entire project consists of seven signalized intersections.
The proposed work consisted of traffic signal design for seven intersections. Cold planing and resurfacing with full depth pavement reconstruction was required in selected areas. Where the existing traffic signal locations were found to be deficient and non-compliant to State and Federal (MUTCD) design standards, the signal system locations were upgraded. The project involved the design of new traffic signal timing and an overall traffic signal equipment upgrade. The traffic signal equipment update included new signal heads, overall traffic signal equipment configuration including signage and pavement markings, new vehicle loop detection, emergency vehicle pre-emption system, signal phasing and timing, signal coordination and the structural integrity of the signal poles, mast arms and signal control cabinet.
The proposed work also included installation of curb and sidewalks to provide a continuous pedestrian path throughout the project corridor. Traffic Signal related improvements included establishing a closed-loop coordination system for three closely spaced traffic signals in the Downtown area.
