Accelerated Bridge Program
Statewide, Massachusetts
BETA has been actively involved in the implementation of the FHWA’s Every Day Counts initiative thorough MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP). BETA has designed projects using accelerated bridge construction techniques aimed at reducing the onsite construction time and accelerated project delivery.
On the Bay Street Bridge Project, BETA designed secant pile walls for support of the abutments and Prefabricated Bridge Units (PBUs). The secant pile walls were installed from street level thereby eliminating the need for major excavation and excavation support systems. The PBUs consisted of a pair of rolled steel beams and a concrete deck shipped to the site in units and erected in just half a day.
On the Wickford Road Bridge Project, BETA designed the 3-span continuous rolled steel beams with full-depth precast concrete deck panels which will allow the installation of the deck to be completed in a fraction of the time required for a traditional cast-in-place concrete deck.
As part of the Design/Build Team for the CSX Bridge Bundle #1 Project, BETA fast-tracked the design to allow construction to commence within months of the NTP. Design submissions and MassDOT reviews were expedited through over-the-shoulder reviews, bi-weekly meetings, and use of electronic submissions. Precast and modular elements were incorporated into the designs to reduce the on-site construction duration.
BETA’s recent assignments under the ABP include:
- Chester – Baystate Drive over CSX RR
- Framingham – Wickford Road over Sudbury River
- Hinsdale – Bridge Street over CSX RR
- Hinsdale – Route 8 (Washington Street) over CSX RR
- Medford – Rte 16 (Revere Beach Parkway) over MBTA
- Taunton – Bay Street over Mill River
- Taunton – Washington Street over Mill River
