North Square Project Receives Two Awards for Historic Preservation

North Square, Boston, MA

As one of the oldest continuously occupied neighborhoods in the City of Boston, the North End contains some of the most significant historic and cultural sites in the country. North Square served as a backdrop to an evolving city and country, from the pre-revolutionary home of Paul Revere to the numerous waves of immigrants that have moved to the area, creating a diverse culture cherished by neighborhood residents.

The City of Boston recognized the need to preserve this historic site while also integrating improvements that would bolster economic development, reinvigorate tourism, and improve safety and mobility for all modes of transportation. BETA Group, Inc. worked with the City to prepare design concepts for North Square. BETA’s services included visioning, community outreach, civil/site engineering, transportation engineering, landscape architecture, coordination with the project’s artists, and construction oversight.

The completed project was recently awarded a Preservation Achievement Award from the Boston Preservation Alliance and an American Public Works Association (APWA) Public Works Project of the Year Award in the national Historic Preservation category.

Bestowed annually since 1988, the Preservation Achievement Awards honor outstanding achievements in historic preservation and compatible new construction in Boston. Celebrated for their positive impact on the City’s built environment, winning projects are looked upon as models for future preservation work.

The APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in the management, administration, and implementation of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor working together to complete public works projects. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, APWA will recognize this year’s Project of the Year Award winners in a video posted to www.apwa.net on August 31.

Having also received widespread recognition from the community as a revitalized landmark of the City, North Square has become a defining feature in its neighborhood while remaining authentic to its character and history.
