Earth Day Cleanup for BETA Volunteers in Needham, MA

May 5, 2016

Lincoln, RI – On April 30th, 2016, employees from BETA Group, Inc. were up bright and early to lend a hand for the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup organized by the Charles River Watershed Association. The event brings together volunteers to pick up litter and assist with park maintenance along the river and its surrounding watershed. BETA volunteers were assigned to the Walker Gordon Pond and Field in Needham, Massachusetts.

BETA has worked on various projects in the Town of Needham for many years, but this site was of particular interest because in 2012 BETA completed a project to improve drainage in the park and rehabilitate the surrounding fields. BETA worked with the Town to determine the irrigation network layout, select preferred playground equipment, and establish appropriate field surface materials and configuration. As part of the project, a low-maintenance stone dust reflection path was designed to guide pedestrians along the edge of the park from the parking lot, behind the basketball court, playground, and baseball field leading up to the picnic area. Located next to wetlands and Walker Pond, BETA’s design addressed environmental concerns by incorporating pervious materials for the parking lot and walking path.

Walking along that path, BETA volunteers picked up debris and plenty of baseballs from the brush surrounding the field and pond area. In the parking lot and playground, volunteers pulled weeds and gathered fallen branches.

“It always feels great to participate in something like this that will benefit the environment. The fact that we played a part in designing this site makes it feel even better,” one volunteer stated.

BETA’s mission is to provide our clients with integrated solutions that improve the communities where we live and work. We feel especially fortunate to be able to revisit a completed project site and continue to make improvements that will benefit the community.
