BETA Wins Connecticut Statewide Sign Management System Project

May 22, 2012

BETA is excited about starting a new project for the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT). BETA will develop a Highway Sign Inventory and Management System (System) which CTDOT will utilize in order to comply with FHWA/MUTCD requirements to maintain sign retro-reflectivity.

Not a small effort, this project will undertake a detailed inventory of 4,000 miles of highway, recording each of the Connecticut’s estimated 400,000 signs into a computerized database. Working with CTDOT, BETA has devised a process using the statewide video log resource to expedite this inventory process, saving thousands of man-hours over a field based effort.

Once the system configuration and inventory is complete, BETA will field test the system putting it through its paces while applying asset identification tags to approximately 100,000 signs. It is anticipated this project will require two years to complete.

The need for a statewide system was identified by the Department when the MUTCD required agencies to document retro-reflectivity performance for its signs. BETA’s effort is a key part of CTDOT’s plan for being compliant with this mandate. Our prior experience in providing similar services to municipalities throughout New England was important to CTDOT in selecting BETA for this project.
