BETA Kicks Off Dedham Square Project

March 29, 2012

Developed through a series of local meetings between BETA and the Town, the Dedham Square Project will provide significant pedestrian enhancements including wider sidewalks, curb extensions, reduced crossing distances and signal phasing. Much of the Dedham Square’s infrastructure dates back the turn of the century. These significant public improvements to Dedham Square have been under design development for the last four years. Finally, construction will begin this Spring and the Square will be treated to much needed traffic, roadway and streetscape improvements.

Streetscape elements will upgrade the visual appearance of the Square, which is home for many local businesses and State Courts and the Registry. Treatments will include ornamental lighting, brick surfaces at selected locations, bike racks and the like. The project will also include pavement rehabilitation, new granite curbing, and textured crosswalks.

The project limits include High Street from Ames Street to Providence Highway underpass and improvements along Washington Street from School Street to Harris Street and Eastern Avenue from High Street to Providence Highway. The Project will remove the outdated “dummy” traffic signal island located within the High Street/Washington Street intersection and install modern traffic signal systems at two locations. The work also includes the upgrade of the Keystone parking lot.

Dedham Square is the Town’s Central Business District and this construction will provide safety improvements as well as aesthetic improvements and ultimately will not only help promote the Square but maintain its economic vitality as well.
